Golden Beach in Black & White | Robyn Hills | $1942 | Traditional black and white film, multiple exposures of the same scene in camera

Immersing myself in the beauty of seeing a scene that will work with my multiple exposure technique, gives me delight and energy. Walking with my medium format camera in the mornings is part of my exercise. Combining these ideals makes my heart sing. No additional manipulation applied. What I captured in camera, is what you are viewing.

Native Seaweed – Plocamium dilatatum | Greg Elms | $900 | archival inkjet print from digital scan

Most people step over seaweed at the beach and consider it, if they regard it at all, as something weird and ugly. Even the common name, seaweed, is dismissive. But seaweed can be incredibly beautiful, and it is definitely precious – most of the seaweeds on the South East Australian coastline appear nowhere else in the world.

Fading | Lianne Manley | $550 | Digital

Beauty – how is it defined. As we grow older and fade with age, my light still shines but does this mean we are no longer considered beautiful? It is important to remember that true beauty comes from within. The experiences we have had, the lessons we have learned, and the love we have shared all contribute to our inner light.

No 08

Malika | Raoul Slater | $500 | Wet-plate collodion tintype

Malika is a member of a family that seems to be involved in everything my community has to offer. Whenever I go out, the Wedlocks are there. At my daughter’s school speech night, Malika performed in a ballet performance. For a moment she threw this pose at the audience, and I conceived of a tintype image looking down the barrel of her gaze.

Alice Has Her Cake | Lauren Starr | $1800 | Digital photograph with composited photographic elements

I guess when I really think about it, Alice is a version of me, and probably lots of you too. It’s the version I’m becoming. The curious, feisty woman who doesn’t care so much about berating her aging body, and eats the yummy cake without the side serve of guilt trip. Without the constant agony of imagining what other people think of her.

No 14

Early Light, Carrickalinga | David Hume | $400 | Digital Photograph

In my work I strive to reveal the profound beauty of nature’s simplest forms. I use photography to examine the way that light interacts with matter and how this interaction may be captured and transformed into art. By doing so I invite a deeper connection with our world and a broader perspective on the landscape we inhabit.

Into the Misty – Tre Cime di Lavaredo, Dolomites Italy | Craig Crosthwaite | $500 | Photography

When you travel overseas you don’t often have the time to wait for the perfect conditions. Tre Cime di Lavaredo, the 3 Peaks was on my bucket list, so when I arrived to find it lost in fog I thought I might miss out. I decided to hike an hour to the spot I knew I wanted and sat there and waited…and then this happened. Luck OR persistence?

Reuben Kaye | Alan Moyle | $585 | digital

This was the first time I’d met Reuben, an award-winning cabaret performer. Relax and Dream | Paul Bartlett | $250 | Photograph

The gentle Lady asking for bottle, cans & change in Sanur.

“May I take your photo”, I gestured, which lead to an unnatural & performative wave at the camera.

With a deep breath, she closed her eyes & blessed me with this beautiful moment.

I can only imagine what she dreamt about.

Wasted Beauty | Orlando Luminere | $900 | Camera obscura digital made from kitchen rubbish bin and other urban waste

An unarguably beautiful landscape is kaleidoscopically reflected on the insides of a discarded steel waste bin, now fashioned into a camera obscura.

This waste bin is a metonym for our propensity to validate beauty with short-lived smartphones and even shorter-lived social media likes.

I urge you to ask how you experience and value beauty.

No 22

Doubt | Debra Billson | $150 | Digital photograph, iPhone 11 Pro Max

As my daughter prepares for an evening out, the mirror reflects her faltering self-confidence. Real life has no filters, and no brush can erase the unease she feels from a lifetime of viewing women transformed on Instagram. There’s a harsh contrast between digital perfection and authentic beauty.

No 23

fLIGHT #5 | Paul Lambeth | $1200 | Digital Photograph

I’m a bushwalker who makes images. More accurately, a bush stroller, or bush sitter who makes images. Photography can be a very fast method of making images, a fabulous power of the medium, also a limitation. I attempt to slow the process of seeing. Rummaging around in the primordial detail gives me a sense of being close to life.

Our memory of beauty is an imperfect recall of our perceptions. This work captures the beauty of landscapes, reflecting human experience-how we feel, perceive and remember it. By distilling landscapes to their essence and removing details, it highlights photography’s role in transcending subjective views and preserving what might otherwise be lost.
